Cultivating Cultural Heritage: Laos Workshop in Pu'er City Promotes Intangible Heritage Safeguarding

UNESCO-backed Event Facilitates Cross-Cultural Exchange
Amongst a vibrant display, the Workshop on Safeguarding Intangible Cultural Heritage for Laos commenced in Pu'er City, Yunnan Province, on April 22. Organized by the International Training Centre for Intangible Cultural Heritage in the Asia-Pacific Region (CRIHAP) and Laos's Ministry of Information, Culture, and Tourism, the event aims to bolster efforts in preserving and promoting Laos's rich intangible cultural heritage (ICH).

Dignitaries including Ms. Liu Hongchang of CRIHAP, Mr. Hu Jianrong of Pu'er City, and Mr. Phouheuang Souvannalath of Laos's Ministry of Information, Cultural, and Tourism graced the opening ceremony with insightful speeches. The workshop, supported by various esteemed organizations including UNESCO, China Cultural Centre in Laos, and Yunnan Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism, underscores a collective commitment to fostering cultural preservation and exchange.

Over the course of four days, more than 20 cultural officials from Laos, along with representatives from various provinces and counties, will delve into the intricacies of ICH Inventorying. Guided by UNESCO ICH Facilitators, participants will explore inventorying methodologies, ethical principles, and the nexus between intangible cultural heritage and sustainable development. Through dynamic learning formats such as lectures, case studies, fieldwork, and group discussions, attendees will not only enhance their practical skills but also foster meaningful dialogue and knowledge exchange.

This workshop not only signifies a crucial step in bolstering Laos's capacity in safeguarding its cultural heritage but also serves as a platform for cross-border cooperation and mutual learning. As participants immerse themselves in the rich tapestry of intangible cultural heritage, they pave the way for deeper understanding, appreciation, and collaboration in preserving our shared cultural legacy.
